The tutor will work with you on your question or concept to make sure you understand how it works, and that you can answer it on your own. The tutors will never just give the answer, but they will use leading questions, step-by-step instruction or an example to make sure you understand!

How do I connect to a tutor?

Getting a tutor is easy—just sign into your account, choose your subject and grade level, and we'll connect you with a certified, professional tutor in minutes. There's no need to make an appointment, and our tutors are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Whether you need help understanding a difficult concept or just a few minutes to check your work, our tutors are standing by now.

How do I create an account?

How do I use my credit card or cell phone to create a free trial?

If you're creating a free trial account, we can verify your information either with your credit card, or by texting an activation code to your cell phone. We use these authentication methods to make sure that only one of our free trial offers goes to each household.

For credit card authentication: If you choose to use a credit card, just click "Activate with a credit card," enter your billing information, and then click "Continue." We won't charge your card -- we will never make a purchase that you don't authorize!

For cell phone authentication: To use your cell phone number, click "Activate with a cell phone," enter your number, and we'll send you a text message with a Tutor.com activation code. Enter it in the box marked "Activation code" and then click "Continue."

How does it help students?

When students and tutors connect in our online classroom, our tutors use leading questions, step-by-step instruction or examples to help students reach solutions on their own. Who can use this service?

Tutor.com is designed for students in the U.S. who are taking math, English, science and social studies courses at the 4th through 12th grade level, including AP-level classes. This includes students studying for college entrance exams or high-school equivalency tests.

Students must have a valid U.S. billing address in order to purchase this service.

Who are your tutors?

Our tutors are select undergraduate and graduate students, teachers, professors, professionals in their fields from across the US and Canada.

All of our tutors must complete a rigorous certification and screening process, including subject exams, practice sessions and a third-party background check, before they are approved to tutor. All tutors are assigned experienced mentors who provide continuous feedback, ideas for improvement and quality control.

Do I have to schedule sessions in advance?

You never need to schedule an appointment for help—simply sign into your account, choose the subject and grade level you need help with, and we'll connect you with a professional, certified tutor in minutes. With thousands of tutors available on demand, you will never have to wait more than a few minutes to get the help you need.

Do I have to use a whole hour every time I sign on?

Sessions can be as long or as short as you need. Any minutes remaining in your Time Bank are good for up to six months and will roll over each month if you don't use them.

How do I connect to a tutor?

If you're ready to connect to a tutor, simply sign into your account and click the green "Connect" button. When a new window opens, choose your subject and grade level, and then type your question in the box marked "What question do you need help with?" (you can also draw your problem on our two-way whiteboard). Please be as thorough as possible in your pre-session question – the more time you spend explaining your problem here, the less time you'll spend explaining it to your tutor in the online classroom. That saves you minutes and money.

Do I need any additional software to connect to a tutor?

There's no additional software or equipment to purchase. As long as your computer meets our system requirements, you will be able to connect to a tutor within minutes.

I had a tutor I really liked—can I request that same tutor for my next session?

To make sure you get the help you need as quickly as possible, we match you to the first available tutor in your requested subject.

Do I have to sign in at my real grade level?

We recommend that you choose the grade level of the class you need help with. For instance, if you're a ninth grader taking eleventh grade geometry, you should sign in for eleventh grade geometry when you need help for that class.

 

Technical

When I try to sign in to the classroom, I get an error message that says I don't meet the system requirements because I need Flash. What should I do?

Go to Adobe's™ website to install the Flash plugin. Follow the instructions there.

What are the system requirements for Tutor.com Direct?

To use Tutor.com you will need either:

  • A PC running Microsoft™ Windows XP Home, Windows XP Professional or Windows Vista with Internet Explorer 6 or higher and Adobe™ Flash Player 8 or higher or
  • A Mac running OS X with Safari 2.0 or higher or Firefox 1.5 or higher and Adobe™ Flash Player 8 is required to use Tutor.com Direct.

Technical support is only available to users that meet these minimum system requirements. Other browsers and operating systems are not supported.

How do I reach technical support?

Our technical support team is available Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Eastern time. If you experience a technical problem, please call us at (800) 411-1970 or sign into your account and visit the Customer Support link in the top navigational bar to contact us by email. Just describe the nature of your problem and let us know when you're available to speak with our technical support team, and we will be happy to arrange an appointment for you.

I forgot my username.

If you are the main account holder, your username is the email address you used to open the account. If you are using your student login, your username is the name you chose when you created the login. Call us at (800) 411-1970 if you need further assistance.

I forgot my password.

If you are the main account holder, simply click "Forgot your password?" on the Sign In page, enter the email address associated with the main account, and we'll send you your sign-in information automatically.

If you have a student login and have forgotten your password, the main account holder must sign in and reset this.

I remember my user name and password, but I still can't sign in.

Purchasing

How do I add more time to my account?

To add minutes simply sign into your account, visit the Time Bank link in the top navigational bar and click "Purchase additional minutes." You'll see a list of pricing packages—simply choose the package that best meets your needs and click "Continue" to add minutes to your account. You can also call us at 800-411-1970 during our business hours, and we will be happy to add minutes over the phone.

Please note that only main account holders can purchase additional time. Student logins do not have the ability to make purchases.

What is the Auto-Replenish option?

We created Auto-Replenish to make sure you never run out of minutes during a session. With Auto-Replenish enabled, you will automatically purchase additional minutes when your account balance falls below 25 minutes. You can set the Auto-Replenish level to 50, 100, 200, 300, or 500 minutes.

By default, Auto-Replenish is disabled. To enable it, sign into your account and click the "Enable Auto-Replenish" link in the Time Bank Summary box. Choose "Yes, enable auto-replenish," select a pricing package from the drop-down menu, and click "Continue." . Student logins do not have the ability to enable Auto-Replenish.

What if I want to buy minutes in increments other than 50, 100, 200, 300, or 500?

Call us at 800-411-1970 and we'll be happy to set up a custom package for you. Remember that the more minutes you buy at a time, the more you save.

 

Account

Where can I update my account information?

Where can I update my account information? On the Account Details page, you can update your email address, password, address and billing information. You can also view your Account History to see all charges and credits to your account.

How do I create a student login?

On the Student Logins page, click "Add New Login," enter the student's first name, and choose a username and password. Then, then click "Add Login." The student may now sign into Tutor.com Direct using the Username and Password you have just created.

Why would I want to create student logins?

With student logins, everyone using your Tutor.com account can sign into the website with a unique username and password. Each student can view transcripts of his or her previous sessions, and the main account holder can view all students' previous sessions and add minutes to the shared Time Bank. Plus, if you have multiple computers, more than one child can get help at the same time.

What is the Tutoring Session Summary?

The Tutoring Session Summary provides you with a quick rundown of session data that is broken down by user, total number of sessions, average user rating and time in session in the last 7, 30 or 90 days.

What is the Previous Sessions feature?

The Previous Sessions feature allows you to review transcripts of all your sessions in the last 90 days. It's a great way to keep track of a student's progress or brush up on an old subject without using any minutes. To view previous sessions, simply sign into your account and click the Previous Sessions link in the top navigational bar.

For copies of sessions that are older than 90 days, please contact our office at 800-411-1970.

What is Get More Help?

Clicking the Get More Help link next to a session will allow you to begin a new session by preloading your initial question and whiteboard from that session.

I am experiencing a technical issue, what do I do?
I am not satisfied with the outcome of my tutoring session, what are my options?

If you are not satisfied with any of your sessions, please request a session credit online or let us know by phone at 800-411-1970. We will be happy to credit the minutes used in any session that you are not happy with.
