Killeen Independent School District to offer Tutor.com Services to Ninth Graders

Program Supplements Existing Department of Defense Online Tutoring Program

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md, – July 21, 2010 – Tutor.com, the largest online tutoring service and Killeen Independent School District (KISD) announced today from the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) 12th Annual Conference that KISD will offer Tutor.com’s one-to-one, online tutoring and homework services to ninth grade students for the 2010-2011 school year. This new program will be for civilian students to help them with ninth grade curriculum including challenging math and science courses.

About half of the 39,000 students in the school district currently have access to Tutor.com through the Department of Defense’s Online Tutoring program which is made available for free to eligible military families. Students across the world completed more than 60,000 online tutoring sessions with professional tutors since Tutor.com for U.S. Military Families launched in late 2009. Now, KISD is expanding the program to make it available to all civilian ninth grade students, as well.

Ninth graders will have access to professional tutors online seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. – Midnight seamlessly expanding instructional time and individual time on task for every student with access to the program. Any time a student gets stuck on a homework assignment, is studying for an exam or simply didn’t understand the day’s lesson, he or she can get online and connect to a tutor in math, science, English or social studies.

The online tutor works one on one with the student in real-time, using an interactive whiteboard. Monthly reports are shared with KISD to identify where students are struggling and document the skills they are mastering.

“We are pleased to see KISD embrace online tutoring to expand the instructional day for all ninth grade students who are facing the challenges of entering high school and more demanding coursework,” said George Cigale, founder and CEO of Tutor.com. “A decade of offering online tutoring services has demonstrated that students who use our program go to school with completed assignments, are more confident and more engaged in the learning process.”
