In 1998, a small group of passionate education and technology professionals led by George Cigale had a terrific URL and a big idea—use the Internet to connect students to tutors for a one-to-one learning session anytime from anywhere. That idea became a reality when the team recruited about a hundred tutors and created one of the first online, interactive classrooms.

Tutors complete an extensive application and training process that includes completing subject exams, a final exam on tutoring techniques and a mock tutoring session. Every tutor must also pass a thorough third party background check.

All of Tutor.com's services feature proprietary, secure Web environments where students and tutors chat using instant messaging, draw problems on an interactive whiteboard, share a file to review essays and papers and browse educational resources on the web together.
