You've completed the initial application!

Congratulations!  You are well on your way to joining the Tutor.com team.  You have met our initial educational, technological, and miscellaneous requirements to become an online tutor with Tutor.com.

The next step is to test your proficiency in some of the subjects we offer to our students.

The Subject Exam Phase

Tutor.com offers over 40 academic subjects to our various Consumer and Institutional markets.  If there is a need for additional tutors in one of our subjects at this time, that subject will appear in the list with an asterisk to the left of the subject name.  You may test in all available subjects if you wish - however, you will need to pass the exam in at least ONE asterisked subject to be invited to the next phase of the process.

Can't find the subject exam you were looking for?  Our staffing needs change throughout the year and we may not always be actively onboarding in a particular subject.  If you can't find your preferred subject, we suggest testing in other areas and/or checking back later to see if the exam is available.

We offer a multitude of subjects in Math, Science, Technology, the Humanities and more.  Take as many exams as you feel you are qualified for - the more subjects in which you are approved, the more tutoring opportunities will be available.

Once you've selected a subject exam, you'll be given some initial information.  All exams are:

  • Timed, with a time limit between 45 minutes up to 3 hours, depending on the length and complexity
  • Anywhere from 25 up to 60 questions
  • Multiple choice, with only one correct answer per question
  • Immediately graded upon completion.  If you leave the page prior to time expiring, the exam may be graded with all unanswered questions marked as Incorrect.

FAQs

Why Do I Need to Take an Exam?

Students and clients love Tutor.com because of the quality educational experience they have whenever they connect with our tutors. One of the ways we can ensure a quality experience is by knowing our tutors have correct content, for the most frequently submitted session requests, front of mind. We conduct thousands of sessions each night in a fast-paced online environment and students trust tutors to be able to guide them quickly, efficiently, and correctly.

It is for these reasons that competencies are verified through our full-length subject exams & “Fast Track” exams.

About the Exams & Fast Track questionnaires

The introductory page of each exam will denote the # of questions/time limit/ or if it is a Fast Track questionnaire. The intro page of full exams will also let you know if/when a Fast Track option is available and to whom.

I have a Master’s degree, PhD, or certification- do I still need to take an exam? (a.k.a. what is a Fast Track questionnaire?)

For most of our subjects we have 2 options- a full-length multiple-choice exam open to anyone, or what we refer to as a Fast Track which is just a few questions verifying your qualifications. Most fast tracks are denoted by key suffixes in the exam name listed such as “CPA approved”, “CFA”,  or highlighted credentials such as “Bachelors”, “Masters”, “PhD”, or “Certified”.

What do the full-length exams entail?

All full-length exams are:

  • Timed, with a time limit between 45 minutes up to 3 hours, depending on the length and complexity
  • Anywhere from 25 up to 60 questions
  • Multiple choice, with only one correct answer per question
  • Permit the use of resources (textbooks, websites) and calculators
  • Immediately graded upon completion.

PLEASE NOTE: If you leave the page prior to time expiring, the exam may be graded with all unanswered questions marked as Incorrect. Also if you have multiple exams “lined up” to take in separate tabs, this will cause an error that wipes submitted answers. Please only select one exam to complete and submit at a time.

Can't find the subject exam you were looking for?

Our staffing needs change throughout the year and we may not always be actively onboarding in a particular subject.  If you can't find your preferred subject, we suggest testing in other areas and/or checking back later to see if the exam is available. Unfortunately we cannot send notice when exams are available, so please return to your applicant dashboard to check from time to time.

We offer a multitude of subjects in Math, Science, Technology, the Humanities, and more.  Take as many exams as you feel you are qualified for - the more subjects in which you are approved, the more tutoring opportunities will be available. We do recommend that you stick to one discipline, for example testing only for Science subjects, or Humanities.

What is the passing grade for exams?

In most cases we have set the benchmark high and, depending on the subject, you will need to score 80% or above in order to pass. The introductory page that loads prior to each exam will have specific information on the # of questions, time limit, and minimum passing grade.

What if I fail an exam?

In most cases you will have a second opportunity to pass. We encourage you to review our concept list and brush up on content prior to taking exams. You can also use resources such as textbooks, reference books, or websites, and tools such as calculators during the exam. If you fail a second time, you will not be considered for that subject, however you may have another opportunity to take the exam 3 months later. You would simply reach out to Tutor Support to request another attempt after 3 months have passed.
