Q: Who are the tutors?

Our tutors are active and retired teachers, college professors, professionals, and undergraduate and graduate students at accredited universities. Every tutor goes through an extensive qualification and screening process, including a third-party background check that is updated monthly. Every session is recorded and tutors review their sessions regularly with our team of experienced tutoring mentors.

Q: Does Tutor.com give students the answers?

Absolutely not! Our tutors make sure students can not only solve the problem they are working on, but also answer similar questions in the future—on their own. They'll help students, guide students, and show them how to tackle the problem, but our tutors will never just give students the answer.

Q: Do students need to schedule an appointment with a tutor?

No. Tutor.com is on-demand tutoring. Students simply select a subject and grade level and enter the problem they’d like to discuss. We’ll connect them to the first available tutor in that subject who can help.

Q: How long is a typical tutoring session?

There is no fixed amount of time for a session, but the typical tutoring session is about 20-25 minutes long, and focuses on a student’s specific problem. The goal of every session is to not only help students with the problem at hand, but also to create a learning opportunity to ensure concepts are well understood so students can tackle future problems on their own.

Just like working with a face-to-face tutor, students bring the questions they are working on to the session. This ensures that tutors are working with students on standards-aligned problems their teacher has assigned.

Q: Is Tutor.com safe?

Yes. Tutors do not have access to any personally identifying information about students. Tutors and students see only each other’s first names and last initial. Every session is fully recorded, and every tutor’s background check is updated monthly. All information is stored in our secure servers.

Q: Do my students need any special hardware or software to use Tutor.com?

No. Tutor.com works through the students’ web browser. Tutor.com supports Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari on PC or Macintosh computers. Silverlight (a free browser plug-in from Microsoft) and Flash (a free browser plug-in from Adobe) are also required. Most Tutor.com students use an ordinary mouse to draw on our two-way interactive whiteboard, but digital pens, tablets, trackballs, or any other point-and-click device can be used as well.

Schools use a variety of funding sources, including Title I, general, capital reserve, and federal entitlement grants. Q: What hours is Tutor.com available to students?

Tutor.com is open 24/7, 361 days a year, making Tutor.com available both during the school day as well as after school for homework and studying. We’re only closed on January 1, July 4, Christmas and Thanksgiving. We’ll work with you to set program hours that meet the needs of your school or district.

Q: How long does it take to get a Tutor.com program up and running at my school?

A Tutor.com program can be up and running in just a couple of days. Our dedicated client services team will work with you to answer a few questions about your school’s network, and set up your program. After that, we have a library of posters, program cards and other materials to help you get the word out to all your students.
