London (Customer)
[00:00:00] I am doing a lesson in math and I am not sure how to answer a problem. Here is the problem. "Tell the vertex of the parabola for the equation y = 4x^2 + 5, and tell whether the parabola opens up or down."
[00:00:07] Hello,

Aleams B (Tutor)
[00:00:10] hi, how are you doing?

London (Customer)
[00:00:19] Good, and you?

Aleams B (Tutor)
[00:00:27] I am good
[00:00:42] any idea how to start with this problem?

London (Customer)
[00:00:54] I have no clue.

Aleams B (Tutor)
[00:01:07] have you seen something like this before?

London (Customer)
[00:01:44] It looks vaiguly familiar.

Aleams B (Tutor)
[00:02:02] ok, that is the vertex for of a quadratic equation
[00:02:23] if we write in that form then we can tell that (h,k) is the vertex of the parabola

London (Customer)
[00:02:43] Ok.

Aleams B (Tutor)
[00:03:03] now can we write y =4x^2+5 in that form as well?

London (Customer)
[00:04:29] What is h?

Aleams B (Tutor)
[00:04:40] good question
[00:04:59] if we want to write x^2 as (x-h)^2 what is the right h?

London (Customer)
[00:05:31] 0?

Aleams B (Tutor)
[00:05:40] excellent!
[00:06:09] then what is our vertex?

London (Customer)
[00:06:50] -5?
[00:07:04] oh I mean (0, 5
[00:07:06] )

Aleams B (Tutor)
[00:07:12] awesome!
[00:07:55] now whether the parabola is open up or down we can see it from the coefficient of (x-h)^2
[00:08:04] if it is positive the parabola open up
[00:08:11] if negative the parabola is open down

London (Customer)
[00:08:24] It opens up.

Aleams B (Tutor)
[00:08:32] perfect!

London (Customer)
[00:08:45] Awesome! Thank you very much!
