Take the Stress Out of Homework—Now

Are you totally stressed out about your homework? Well, you are not alone: Nearly 9 out of 10 kids stress out about homework, according to responses from students, teachers, and parents from the Metlife Survey of the American Teacher. The study also said that more than one third of students feel that way almost all the time. That’s some major stress load going on...

The good news is that there’s plenty you can do to deal with it. Try these anxiety-relieving tips and tell us what you think about homework and stress.

  • First of all, take deep breaths! Yes, it's true—just breathing deeply can make all the difference. Deep breaths force your neurological system to relax and calm you—your body can't help but react in a positive way because it's programmed that way.
  • Break it down into smaller tasks. Sometimes the amount of homework you have to do makes it seem impossible. But the reality is that each big assignment is made up of smaller steps and right now, all you have to focus on is the first one.
  • Plan ahead whenever possible. Trying to fit 6 hours worth of homework into one night is only going to up your stress level—do things ahead of time whenever you can.
  • Look at how you use your time. Let's get real for a minute...texting friends doesn't take long, but every little interruption takes up time. And with all that's on your plate these days—soccer practice, piano lessons, afterschool job, eating dinner, taking out the trash, etc.—every second counts.
  • Work with a friend. Whether in real life or online with someone at Tutor.com, having someone else studying with you and on your side can help lower homework anxiety.
  • If you are over-the-top stressed out about homework, then talk to your teacher and/or guidance counselor about it. Letting them know you're stressed helps them know how to help you succeed.

These are just a few ways to help keep from getting overwhelmed when homework seems like it's just too much. We want to know how you feel—tell us how often you feel anxious about homework by answering the question below.

I have no breaks between assignments and have exams at the sem time- all the whilst homework is piling up as well. My teachers (6 or 7 subjects) never think to talk to each other about splitting it up or anything. During holidays I have assignments too. OUTRAGE!

Since freshmen, I would come home late after practices or games like around 8:30 PM and I would have to take a shower, eat and then do my homework at around 9:30. I have to rush into finishing my homework before midnight, but I always fails. I always went to bed like at 1 or way late and I didn't have time to study because I need to catch up on my sleep. Plus, I'm deaf so that's even worst. I have to work five times harder than hearing people at my school. I don't know how, but its a miracle that I got it through cause I'm a junior now. I would have to say homework does help me review what I learn in class a little and it kind of help me prepare for the test as well. I just wish my school wouldn't give me so much homework. I also, wish my parent and teachers wouldn't have high expectations from me. It sucks.. gosh

I've been writing an essay (persuasive speech) on the subject of "Too Much Homework" and one of the reasons in my thesis is for stress. Stress is an ongoing outcome of too much homework resulting in breakdowns. How many times have kids brokendown from the stress of homework, school, sports, clubs, volutneer work and jobs? Kids end up working more hours than a standard work day for adults. I always end up going to bed late, yet still get more sleep than most of my friends. Somehow i manage 8 blissful hours of sleep a night and am able to function well the next day, while peers end up getting a mere 5 hours of sleep. The combination of things that society is pushing on kids creates a stressful enviornment and sometimes the stress management just adds on more stress. For less stress expectations need to be lowered, not that we have to work harder to minimize the stress.

After 7 hours of school, why must we have 4+ hours of homework?? It's getting ridiculous.
